Similar in shape to a large banana shallot, with a red skin, Tropea Onions are renowned for their amazing sweetness and aroma.  A good Tropea onion is much sweeter than a regular red onion, not because they have a higher sugar content but instead, they have a much lower level of acidity, which allows the natural sugars shine through.  According to the locals, a good Cipolla Rossa di Tropea can be eaten like an apple!
