The malt is peated to a phenol level of approximately 18–22 ppm, which is a medium peating level. The water, piped direct to the distillery from springs on Cnoc nan Speireag (Hawk Hill), has also flowed through and over peat which adds additional complexity. After fermentation the wash is transferred first to the wash still then the spirit still. These are of an unusual design with swan neck lye pipes - the vapour travels round a loop in the pipes to the worm tubs, so some of the alcohol has already condensed before it reaches the cooler. It then runs back in to the stills and is distilled again. Maturation takes place in a mix of American and European oak refill casks and heavily charred casks.
